The Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) is preparing for a significant leadership change, with the board set to hand over the reins to new executives following the end of its current tenure.

NWF President Daniel Igali revealed that the board has agreed to field candidates from within its ranks, individuals who share the federation’s long-term vision.

“We want people who are clearly aligned with our policies going forward. We have a long-term plan for the federation, and we’re looking at 2032, 2036,” Igali said in a press briefing in Abuja.

Election Timeline Announced

The NWF elections are scheduled to take place between September 1st and 15th, with zonal elections set for August 2nd. Igali expressed confidence in the board’s readiness and the leadership qualities of the incoming contenders.

“We feel that people who have been in the system, who have the passion and zeal to move this federation to greater heights, should come forward and contest,” Igali added.

Adeniyi Tipped as Front-Runner

A key figure being backed to succeed Igali is Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who also serves on the NWF board. Adeniyi recently made history by being elected Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO), an umbrella body representing 186 customs administrations worldwide.

“We, as his immediate constituency, are extremely proud,” said Igali.

“This honour reflects positively on our board and federation.”

Adeniyi, while acknowledging the widespread support he received for his WCO role, addressed the calls urging him to run for the NWF presidency.

“I am studying the guidelines that have been released, and I’m going to consult with my colleagues regarding my eligibility,” he stated.

NWF Challenges and Achievements

Igali reflected on his time as president, highlighting funding as a major challenge. However, he noted that Adeniyi’s involvement brought financial stability and accountability.

“Not only did he support us financially, but he also showed up at virtually every board meeting, locally and internationally. He’s been exemplary,” Igali said.
