…As CAN calls him a towering figure of faith
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), has disclosed that the reign of Pope Francis was characterised by his tireless advocacy for the marginalised and vulnerable, emphasising the importance of serving the poor and promoting social justice.
Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
According to a statement signed by Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, president of the CBCN, Pope Francis implemented significant reforms within the Church, including changes to the liturgical books and the establishment of new departments in the Vatican Office.
In the area Ecumenism and Interfaith Dialogue, it stated that Pope Francis fostered greater understanding and cooperation between different Christian denominations and faith communities, promoting a culture of dialogue and mutual respect.

According to Nigerian Bishops, Pope Francis was revered for his humility, compassion, and commitment to serving other throughout his papacy. “His legacy will continue to inspire millions around the world.”
The Pope’s funeral will follow the updated liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which he approved in April 2024. “The simplified and solemn ceremony will reflect his desire for a more austere and faith-focused celebration.”
Ugorji urges all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the happy repose of Pope Francis and for the Catholic Church at this period. May God grant Pope Francis eternal rest in His Kingdom. Amen.
Similarly, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commiserated with the Catholic Church on the passing of Pope Francis.
CAN in a statement signed by its president, Daniel Okoh, described the late Pope as a towering figure of faith whose papacy radiated mercy, justice, and a profound love for humanity.

According to CAN, Pope Francis’ legacy left an indelible mark on Nigeria, where he strengthened the Church by appointing Nigerian bishops and cardinals, affirming the vibrant faith of Nigerians.
CAN stated that the late Pope’s unwavering commitment to interfaith dialogue brought hope for peace in diverse nation, nurturing unity in the face of many challenges
This brings an end to a pontificate which commenced on March 13, 2013, when he was elected to succeed Pope Benedict XVI, who had resigned on February 28, 2013.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as he was born, chose Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
