As part of efforts to monitor and improve air quality along key transport corridors, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has procured a range of low-cost Air Quality Monitoring Devices (AQMDs) through a grant from the University of Chicago Energy Policy Institute’s Clean Air Program.

LAMATA stated this in its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the devices, sourced from multiple manufacturers including IQAir, AirBeam, AirGradient, and Star Krest will support the authority’s strategic objectives around sustainable transport and public health by enabling data collection on emissions from LAMATA-regulated bus operations.

According to LAMATA, this initiative is designed to build a credible, Lagos-specific emissions data bank to support evidence-based policy, operational decisions, and investment planning, while also promoting local research capacity and technical expertise.

“Approximately 45 AQMD units are expected to be deployed across Lagos, generating actionable insights on air quality and emissions trends along major transit corridors.

“To ensure transparency and broader impact, data from these devices will be publicly accessible through the OpenAQ platform, supporting collaboration with researchers, civil society, and policy makers globally,” LAMATA stated.
