Nigeria’s U20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, have kicked off their training camp in Accra ahead of the 2025 WAFU B U20 championship, scheduled to run from July 10 to 23 in the Ghanaian capital.
Originally planned as an expanded tournament involving teams from both WAFU A and WAFU B zones, organisers have now reverted to a WAFU B-only format, with all matches set to be played at the Prampram Technical Centre in Accra.
Zubairu names strong 20-man squad
Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu has named a 20-man squad led by captain Daniel Bameyi, drawing largely from the core of the side that finished third at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt, securing qualification for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
Notable returnees include goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, defender Odinaka Okoro, and midfielders Bidemi Amole, Ezekiel Kpangu, Divine Oliseh, and Tahir Maigana.
Zubairu has also handed opportunities to fresh talents, including Clinton Andy (Bayelsa United), defenders Abba Sadiq and Marvellous Freedom, midfielder Abduljelil Kamaldeen, and forwards Imrana Muhammad and Qudus Olayiwola.
Flying Eagles aim for hat-trick of titles
The Flying Eagles are two-time defending champions of the WAFU B U20 Championship, having lifted the trophy in the previous editions hosted by Niger Republic and Togo.
They begin their title defence with a high-stakes clash against hosts Ghana in the Group A opener on Thursday, July 10 at 3pm, followed by a second match against Benin Republic on Sunday, July 13 in a three-nation group.
Group B matchups
Group B consists of Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Togo, with the Ivorians and Burkinabes facing off in the group’s opening game on Thursday.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, with the finalists securing qualification for next year’s Africa U20 Cup of Nations.
The Flying Eagles are determined to maintain their regional dominance and fine-tune preparations for the World Cup in Chile later this year.
