Super Eagles forward and reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, says switching international allegiance from England to Nigeria changed his football career.
Born in England to Nigerian parents, the 27-year-old Super Eagles winger initially rose through the ranks of England’s youth teams, representing the Three Lions at U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels.

Reflecting on that decision in an interview with Arise TV, Lookman said:
“Without a doubt. It changed my career and my life. People know that. This is my home; this is my place, Nigeria. I am the son of the soil.”
The Atalanta forward played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where he scored three goals and registered an assist as the Super Eagles finished as runners-up.
His standout performances earned him the CAF African Player of the Year award, which he received in December in Marrakech, Morocco.
Speaking about the accolade, Lookman expressed deep pride:
“It’s amasing. It’s a privilege to have this. I take it with real pride because I saw many great players, some of the best in the world, win this. To be among them is a blessing.”
Lookman attributed his success to discipline, consistency, and relentless work ethic.
